Links to external sites
Whenever creators create content on the Alles Europa News English site, they should actively consider which external websites may be editorially justified to link to.
Editorial justification for linking to external sites
Producers may wish to offer links to external sites for a number of reasons, including:
For further relevant information.
For additional background information or other key source material.
for useful practical information.
for more informed commentary.
The link must never be included on a public site or in the editorial content of a commercial site in exchange for cash, services or any other kind of reward.
All links on the Alles Europa News English Public Service website or on the editorial pages of the Alles Europa News English Commercial website must be editorially justifiable and suitable for the intended audience – especially children.
Links are not acceptable as a form of credit.
Producers must check the content of the page being tagged before adding a link to the Alles Europa News English page, although the relevant editor is responsible for providing the link.
Where practical, we should consider ways for users who find broken, outdated or inappropriate external Alles Europa News English links to easily report them to us so that we can review, update, replace or remove them.
Disclaimer of Liability
Where we publish a list of links, we should add a standard disclaimer to the effect that “Alles Europa News English is not responsible for the content of any other sites listed”.
If there are links to controversial or challenging material, it may be appropriate to add a specific disclaimer and other information closer to the links, even if there are only one or two links per page.
For “in-story” links to such material, for example highly sensitive content such as an exhaustive description of torture, it may be useful to alert the user to this in context as part of the storytelling.
Links to sites that do not share the editorial values of Alles Europa News English
Context is important when deciding whether a link is appropriate, and it’s often helpful to explain why we’re offering the link.
In some cases, we may offer a link to a site that does not share our editorial values, but that offers useful information.
For example, we may link from a current affairs page to the government’s national news agency website so that the user can see the exact words used in a government statement.
We must be properly impartial. Alles Europa News English-language sites dealing with controversial or public policy issues may offer links to external sites which together represent a reasonable range of views on the subject.
We should ensure that when we link to third party sites, we take into account any concerns that they may be breaking the law, such as defamation or incitement to racial hatred.
Where content is likely to cause serious offense to some users and yet there is a strong editorial justification for covering the story, it may be editorially justified for Alles Europa News English to link to the relevant page rather than hosting the content themselves.
Links to charity sites must be based on reasonable editorial criteria. If there is a charity in the news, it may be appropriate to link to that charity’s page.
But we must be careful not to promote one charity over another. If we are giving advice or general information on a topic and wish to link to a charity, and there are a number of charities working in this area, we should normally link to other major charities working in the area.
These guidelines apply to online links offered by Alles Europa News English Action Lines.
(See editorial guidelines, section 14: Independence from outside interests: Alles Europa News English Support Services 14.3.26)
We should also consider where on the charity website we are linking to – for example, it may be appropriate to link to useful information sources but not to campaign or fundraising pages.
For program support pages, the external link should be justified by the relevance and value of the material to the program’s viewers and listeners.
If we link to an external consultancy from the support page, we should also link to a reasonable number of other relevant agencies.
Where a consumer program reviews a product or service, we should only offer links to the sites of manufacturers, suppliers or retailers of any goods or services listed where strictly editorially justified.
There must be no undue emphasis on products, services or trademarks in our content.
Public services may not endorse or promote any other organization or its products, services or trademarks, so great care should be taken when linking to any site to avoid giving the impression that Alles Europa News English is doing so.
Alles Europa News English Public service sites should not normally link directly to sites whose main purpose is transactional, eg selling goods, downloads or tickets.
Below you will find exclusions for links to purchase Alles Europa News English program content and links to purchase tickets for Alles Europa News English events.
In some cases we may also wish to link directly to the Alles Europa News English charity appeal donation page.
