Netherlands-Police fire shots at farmers protest

Police fire shots at farmers protest in Heerenveen, Netherlands.

On average, 45 professional ships sail through the canal every day. In total, about ninety commercial vessels suffer from the obstruction.

The bridge was blocked by farmers with tractors who protested against the government’s nitrogen policy.

Last night the activists left, but because they had left a heavy mat, the bridge still could not open.

During a protest by farmers near Heerenveen, the police fired a warning shot. Tractor drivers would have tried to drive into officers.

That confirms the police on Twitter.

The incident happened around 22:40 on a driveway of the A32 in Heerenveen. “A threatening situation arose. Warning shots were fired and targeted shots were fired,” writes the police.

A tractor was hit and three suspects were arrested. Because there was shooting by police officers, the Rijksrecherche is investigating.

Bullet hole in tractor

On social media, unverified photos and videos of the incident can be seen. Among other things, officers with drawn weapons can be seen and a bullet hole in a tractor is visible.

BBB wants urgent debate on escalation of farmers’ protests

Member of Parliament Caroline van der Plas (BoerBurgerBeweging) wants an emergency debate with Prime Minister Rutte today about the escalation of the farmers’ protests.

“For some time now, I have been warning against escalation of protests.

On Wednesday I want an urgent debate on this with prime minister and minister of J&V (Justice and Security).

This is going wrong, I said last week. And it goes wrong,” she said on Twitter.

Hay bales and car tyres on fire

Not only at Heerenveen it was restless again last night. On the A50 motorway near Apeldoorn, the fire brigade has been briefly busy extinguishing some fires. According to a spokeswoman for the safety region, it was about hay bales and car tires that were on fire.

According to Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information, earlier in the evening campaigning farmers threw hay bales into the verge of the road and set them on fire ‘in large numbers’.

The obstructions for shipping in the Prinses Margrietkanaal, the waterway between Lemmer and Delfzijl, are over.

The bridge at Gaarkeuken can open again and remains open all night to make up for lost time for the professional skippers, says Rijkswaterstaat.
