Ford chooses Spanish plant for production of electric cars

Ford Motor is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, United States.

In the past, Ford also had a large production site in Belgium. At the time, Ford Genk was the largest employer in the province of Limburg and the second largest car assembly factory in our country.

At the definitive closure on 18 December 2014, 6,000 people lost their jobs. The production was then also transferred to the factory in Valencia.

The American car manufacturer Ford has preferred its factory in Valencia, Spain, for future production of electric cars in Europe to the detriment of its site in Saarlouis, Germany.

Production at the Saarlouis plant will cease by the middle of this decade, Ford has announced.

Ford also indicates that the company will start negotiations with the unions in Europe about a “significant” loss of jobs in its European factories, because the construction of electric cars simply requires less manpower.

“We will need fewer workers to build our electric models,” said Stuart Rowley, chief executive officer of Ford Europe. “We need to reorganize our industrial operations.”

Saarlouis’ German plant, which currently employs 4,600 people, will continue to build the Focus until 2025, but Ford has no plans to manufacture any other models thereafter.
