Armenia welcomes the US to play an important role for it

The statement followed talks between Simonyan and Pelosi, who traveled to the restive Caucasus region on Sept. 17 during her first visit to Armenia.

Pelosi is the most senior U.S. official to visit the former Soviet republic since it gained independence in 1991.

The visit comes days after the outbreak of bloody clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the common border area, in which both sides accused each other of opening fire first.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Armenia at this most serious time is of utmost importance to us.”

On September 18, Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan welcomed the US playing an important role in the West Asian country’s political and economic life.

“The President of the Armenian Parliament noted that the United States plays an important role in the political and economic life of (Armenia).”

Simonyan said: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Armenia at this most serious time is extremely important to us. We always feel her support on the most difficult issues.”

A member of the Democratic Party, Pelosi is the first woman elected speaker and the first woman to lead a major political party in both houses of Congress.

Numbered as the 5th Ward from 1987 to 1993 and the 8th Ward from 1993 to 2013, the district includes most of the city of San Francisco.

Since 1987, she has represented California’s 12th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

Nancy Patricia Pelosi is an American politician serving as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives as of 2019 and previously from 2007 to 2011.
