A trilateral Korea-Japan-US foreign minister’s meeting – Korea reaffirms summit plan with Japan

Last week, South Korea’s presidential office announced that the country and Japan had agreed to hold a meeting between the heads of state, scheduled for Sept. 20 or 21 in New York.

It will be the first South Korea-Japan summit in nearly three years.

Also on September 18, South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin departed for New York, accompanying President Yoon Suk-yeol to meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

Park is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Meanwhile, the parties are discussing holding a trilateral Korea-Japan-US foreign ministers’ meeting on this occasion.

Last week, South Korea’s presidential office announced that south Korea and Japan had agreed to hold a meeting between the heads of state, scheduled for Sept. 20 or 21 in New York.

A senior official from south Korea’s presidential office said on September 18 that there was “no change” in plans to hold the Korea-Japan summit on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The official had denied reports in Japanese media that there was “still uncertainty” about the possibility of a meeting between South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The official stressed that he had not been notified of any changes to the plan. Meanwhile, another official said the two countries had arranged the time and place of the meeting, and were discussing some details such as the agenda.
