Taiwan is a hot-button issue in U.S.-China bilateral relations.

Three U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity on Aug. 27, said the Navy’s cruisers Chancellorsville and Antietam were sailing through international waters in the Taiwan Strait.

The operation comes amid escalating tensions in the region after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island Aug. 2-3.

China responded harshly by holding unprecedented large-scale live-fire drills in 6 areas around Taiwan and imposing sanctions on Pelosi.

Several U.S. congressional delegations then continued to visit the island, despite an angry response from China.

In recent years, U.S. and sometimes allied warships such as Britain and Canada have frequently passed through the strait, angering Beijing.

Such operations typically take between 8 and 12 hours and are closely monitored by the Chinese military.
