Chieh Chung, a Taipei-based security analyst, said blurring the consensus on the median line could increase the risk of unintended conflict.

He also called on the island government to adjust the operating rules of the coast guard and self-defense forces, in order to give them more authority when dealing with a growing challenge from the Chinese military.

U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Aug. 5 that the U.S. would send warships through the Taiwan Strait in the coming weeks to emphasize that it is an international shipping lane.

However, U.S. warships are less likely to challenge Chinese forces on either side of the median line.
