JERA — a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Corporation, Chubu Electric Power Company and local gas companies including Tokyo Gas and Hiroshima Gas — is a buyer of LNG from Sakhalin-2.

Russia’s Gazprom holds about a 50 percent stake in the Sakhalin-2 project, while Two Japanese companies, Mitsui, contributed 12.5 percent and Mitsubishi contributed 10 percent.

The Sakhalin-2 project in Russia’s Far East supplies about 9 percent of Japan’s LNG imports, and other Japanese firms are still considering whether to continue buying LNG from the project.

On August 26, a JERA spokesperson announced that Japan’s largest electricity company had signed a contract with the company that runs the Sakhalin-2 energy project in Russia to maintain the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the long term.
