Japan grants refugee status to nearly 100 Afghans
Japan’s acceptance of Afghan refugees could affect its consideration of granting refugee status to those fleeing conflict-ridden countries such as Myanmar and Ukraine.
The number of newly recognized refugees, including employees who worked at the Japanese Embassy in Kabul and family members, exceeded the record of 74 refugees accepted by Japan in 2021.
Japanese government sources said on Aug. 23 that Japan had granted refugee status to 98 people fleeing Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power last August.

The refugees were among more than 800 Afghans who fled to Japan.
They left Afghanistan amid attacks on former Afghan government officials and people considered associates.
