Xavi: ‘The pressure of expectations weighs on Barca’

Xavi also praised Marc-Andre ter Stegen - the German goalkeeper made two saves in the face-off - and Lewandowski, although the striker played lackluster in his first official game for Barca.

Xavi on the one hand appreciated the Rayo Vallecano defence, but on the other hand admitted Barca were ineffective and did not create many chances. The Spain coach added:

“The result is very disappointing, because we want to prove that Barca are on the right track. But we ask the fans to be patient.”

According to Xavi, despite having just bought a rookie year, Barca still do not have the optimal force.

He hinted the team needs to continue to strengthen before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The Camp Nou owner is reportedly targeting Marcos Alonso, Bernardo Silva and a right-back.

“We don’t want to use incomplete force as an excuse for this draw. I understand the frustration of the fans, and the whole team will analyze, continue to improve and believe in the plan,” Xavi said.

Frenkie de Jong – the midfielder in the sights of Man Utd and Chelsea – was on the bench and played quite well when replacing Gavi from the 60th minute.

According to Xavi, the Dutch midfielder remains a key factor for Barca, but leaves open the possibility of pushing him away to ease the financial burden.

“De Jong’s position is not on the bench. I’ve said many times that he’s an important player,” Xavi said.

“De Jong played well today, like last week. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the transfer market. But if he stays, De Jong will be very important to Barca.”
