Post-Covid-19 Thyroid Dysfunction

There are 4 main types of thyroid diseases: hyperthyroidism (which occurs when the thyroid gland produces too many hormones), hypothyroidism (which occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones), thyroiditis (which arises when the thyroid is inflamed, decreases hormone production), Hashimoto thyroiditis (an autoimmune disease where the body’s cells attack and damage the thyroid gland, Reduces hormone production).

According to Dr. Ilaria Muller, of the Department of Clinical Sciences and Public Health at the University of Milan, Italy, the purpose of the study was to demonstrate that Covid-19 affects thyroid function and causes thyroid inflammation.

Dr. Muller explains that Covid-19 regulates thyroid function to varying degrees, including “thyroid disease syndrome” – a complex combination of adaptive and non-adaptive mechanisms, causing many temporary changes in people experiencing cytokine storms.

In addition, the purpose of the study included correlating thyroid function with the severity of Covid-19.

“We want to monitor the progression of thyroid dysfunction over time to verify the long-term consequences of Covid-19 for the thyroid gland,” Muller said.
