Nearly 300,000 tenants suffer from new housing benefit system in Rotterdam, Netherlands

Now only people who have a social rental property can apply for a supplement.

From 2024, people who rent in the private sector can also receive a supplement if they have a low income. It concerns approximately 136,000 additional tenants who are eligible as a result.

According to the government, the new system is much simpler and therefore less likely to be mistakes made when applying.

Tenants are then less likely to be confronted with chargebacks.

Many people still have difficulty applying for the allowance or do not even know about its existence.

According to calculations, several hundred thousand tenants do not apply for the rent allowance, even though they are eligible for it.
