Federer at Wimbledon: ‘I hope to come back one more time’
The eight-time Wimbledon champion received a standing ovation as he appeared at The Centre Court’s centenary celebration on Sunday.
“I hope to come back… once again,” the 40-year-old Swiss said on Centre Court, standing alongside other Wimbledon champions.
Federer is the owner of the men’s record at Wimbledon with eight titles.
But he was absent from the tournament on grass surface for the first time since 1999.
The owner of 20 Grand Slam crowns has been inactive since succumbing in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon a year ago — his 22nd appearance at the event.
He mentioned that he hadn’t anticipated that his recovery from knee surgery he underwent last year was going to take that long.
“My knee hasn’t treated me well,” he said.
