A train derailed in the US: Dead people, at least 50 passengers injured

This was the second serious accident in two days involving an Amtrak rig.

On Sunday, a train carrying 85 people crashed into a passenger vehicle in rural California. Three people in the car did not survive the collision, and two others suffered serious injuries.

Chariton County Emergency Services Chief Eric McKenzie said the collision killed “several” people and injured at least 50 others.

Three passengers were taken to Columbia University Hospital, hospital spokesman Eric Maze said.

He did not give details about their health.

An air ambulance official told the Kansas City Star that at least eight helicopters were transporting patients from the crashed train.

A train on the Line from Los Angeles to Chicago crashed into a tipper at a level crossing near Mendon around 1:42 p.m. local time (8:42 p.m. CEST), Amtrak said in a statement.

She added that there were “approximately 243 passengers” and 12 crew members on board.

Mendon is located about 160 miles northeast of Kansas City.

According to pictures on social media, the impact completely derailed several wagons. Amtrak said eight wagons and two locomotives ended up off the tracks.
