The tournament, which takes place in Honduras, is a qualifier for the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia 2023 and the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
Guatemala beat, in the penalty shootout, Canada on the second day of the knockout stages of the Concacaf qualifiers for the U20 World Cup, in a dramatic match that had to be defined this Sunday from the penalty spot, at the José de la Paz Herrera National Stadium, in Tegucigalpa.
The match was of alternate dominance and ended tied without goals in the 90 minutes of regulation, so 30 minutes were added.
Canada opened the scoring ten minutes into the first extra half, via a penalty executed by Kamron Habibullah.
But with a minute to go in extra time, Guatemala equalized through Anderson Villagran, which caused the game to be defined in a penalty shootout.
The Guatemalan team ended up winning on penalties 4-3 to leave Canada on the road and seal their passage to the quarterfinals.
The second day of the knockout stages will be completed this Sunday with the games Haiti-Jamaica, El Salvador-Dominican Republic and Mexico-Puerto Rico.
