Atlético Madrid CEO apologized to fans for shirt design
Club Atlético de Madrid, S.A.D. , Atleti in the Spanish-speaking world and commonly known internationally as Atlético de Madrid, is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid that plays in La Liga.
Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, CEO of Atlético Madrid, addressed the fans of Atlético Madrid through a letter about the numerous complaints from them due to the multiple changes that the club suffered in terms of image.
“In recent days there has been some confusion regarding respect for our history and signs of identity, so I am obliged to clearly convey the club’s position.
Never before, in the almost 120 years of Life of Atlético de Madrid, has our history been so exalted and remembered,” he began by saying.
Regarding the shirts for the 2022/23 season, he stated that “the designs have been intended to make a nod to two historical aspects.
The red-and-white shirt is inspired by the Manzanares River that has had so much connection with Atlético de Madrid, representing the route of the river”.
“We apologize to those fans who do not like this design, but the only intention was to remember the past with respect and affection.
On the other hand, in the month of April 2023 we will release a shirt that will be a replica of the shirt of the year 1903 with the original shield and will commemorate the 120 years since the foundation of the club.
The shirt of the 23-24 season has already been approved, with a classic design, and is in the manufacturing phase,” said Gil Marín.
On the path of legends, he explained that “you can agree or not with some of these symbols or tributes”, but that
“it is undeniable that the club has had and has the sensitivity and maximum respect for its identity and its history”.
“Not only with these symbols, but also with the emotional tributes paid to players who have contributed to enlarging our recent history.
This has been the case, for example, with Fernando Torres, Gabi, Juanfran, Filipe Luis, Godín, and just a few weeks ago with Luis Suárez,” he said.
